Balancing Faith and College Life

At school it’s easy to get caught up in the busy schedule, and finding time to spend with God can easily get put on the backburner. Even at Liberty University, one of the largest Christian schools in the world, finding this balance can be extremely difficult.

At Liberty, there’s so many aspects of spiritual growth that they automatically build into your schedule. This is a wonderful thing, but I find that at times, this can feel like a substitute to actually spending alone time with Jesus.

Schoolwork alone takes up a lot of your time at college, and then on top of that you still need to find time for rest, time with friends, and having experiences that you’ll never forget. Working alone time with Jesus into your schedule can feel like a lot, but it’s absolutely possible. Here are some things that I find useful when it comes to managing Spiritual life with college.

You Have More Free Time Than You Think

There is actually so much time at school that we don’t use for anything. Whether it be riding the bus, walking to class, or eating a meal, there are little pockets of spare time throughout your day. Things like listening to Christian music or reading the Bible on my phone during these times helps me to feel more connected to Christ and less distracted by other things. Remember that you have access to your Bible literally anywhere and everywhere, and that you don’t just have to have a dedicated Bible reading time during the day.

Don’t Let What You Learn on Sunday Disappear During The Week

Another thing that helps me to be mindful about time focused on Christ is actually being intentional about applying what I’m learning. Sometimes we walk away from Church or a Bible study and continue on with our week like nothing changed, but I think that when you actively try to live out what you just learned, you’re reminded of the commitment you’ve made to Christ. This helps me feel closer to Him as I’m constantly being reminded of His character!
