There’s so much about coming to college for the first time that can be intimidating. After my first year of college, I realized that I needed to look for something new, and ended up transferring to Liberty University. This switch was much needed and I’m so grateful that I decided to go through with it, but there’s some things that my first try taught me, so let me share my tips!

#1: Friends Don’t Come With Ease, They Come With Time

Before coming into college, I expected to make friends on the first day. While yes, this can be the case, most of the time they won’t stick. That’s okay! Don’t let the picture perfect idea of “The College Experience” distort your image of what real friendships look like. You grow close to people by finding common interests, goals, and hobbies. It takes time and intentionality to make real friendships, and finding the right people at college can take some time. Don’t feel lonely after the first week because you haven’t found your platonic soulmate yet. They’re out there somewhere, and they might take a little bit of time to show up.

#2: Prioritize Balance

Going into college, people will tell you one of two things: Focus on school, or focus on experiences. This may sound like a no-brainer, but both can happen at once. Academics are important, but on the flip side your time at college is short and will fly by. Set aside time in your day to focus on your work, and be intentional about consistently utilizing that time. You can build these little work pockets around activities and events you want to attend, but balance is important and if you find a way to tangibly achieve it, then you’re golden.

#3: You’re Not Committing to a Career, Just Test-Driving It

You may know exactly what you want to do going in to college, but sometimes once you’re doing the coursework you realize it’s not right for you. It’s easy to feel like you’re behind or like you need to have it all figured out even in just your first semester. It’s okay to switch gears and redirect! You have time to slow down and try different things. Don’t trap yourself just because you feel stuck. You’re not!
